What about using my money in Mexico?

These are some common concerns while in Puerto Vallarta:

ATM

Puerto Vallarta and the Bahia de Banderas area operates a large network of ATMs, with debit cards allowing a range of services.  Many of the debit cards are affiliated with Visa Electron, which enable card holders to make transactions in affiliated shops and outlets, in addition to cash withdrawals. Some accounts also provide loyalty bonuses and rewards programs when using the cards, to provide customers with additional benefits.  Major International credit cards or international ATM cards are welcome but they will have a few to withdraw money.

Credit cards

Major credit cards, such as American Express, Visa and MasterCard are accepted across Puerto Vallarta at most restaurants, hotels, activities and shops. When making transactions or cash withdrawals with a credit card, a surcharge may be applied keep an eye on those.

Cash withdrawals

Using debit cards issued by Mexican banks to make cash withdrawals are generally free, or at least you have certain amount of transactions that are free depending on your bank or if using ATMs within the banks network, sometimes using credit cards for cash withdrawals may incur in some fees, even if used on the same branch. ATMs are widely available and they take international cards, but when making cash withdrawals, use the same caution as you do at home, particularly if late at night or the ATM is away from a main pedestrian area.

Money transfers to and from Mexico

In addition to the transfer services provided by the Mexican banks, there are a range of specialist transfer businesses in operation. Research the market thoroughly before making transfers, to ensure that you get the most competitive rate.  There are a few companies that would allow for someone to send you money from the U.S. and you could pick it up at a local supermarket or store.

Currently, there are no restrictions on the amount of foreign currency which may be taken into the country. However, currency exceeding $10,000 US dollars (or equivalent) must be declared to the Customs Department.
