This Huichol tribe comes from the west-central Mexico; they live in faraway in the Sierra Madre Occidental in the states of Nayarit and Jalisco.
Their art is beautiful and really unique; it lies in an ancient tradition: the physical transcription of the images displayed by shamans, induced by the ingestion of peyote (hallucinogen), their sacred cactus, allowing them to cross the barrier of the unknown and relate to the divine.
These beautiful pieces of art are made with beads or with thread (yarn), each carries symbolic reasons, stories and legends of their cosmogony and sometimes it provides an overview of Huichol society. When buying artwork made by them, you not only acquire a true work of art, you will be getting an item full of magic and mysticism. At the same time you will be helping members of these communities support their way of live and communities in the mountains.
Puerto Vallarta offers a wide selection of shops and galleries that offer Huichol art and handcrafts, in some of them you can watch these amazing artisans at work.
