Every year from May to September sea turtles visit the Puerto Vallarta and Bahia de Banderas area to lay their eggs on the local beaches. They are in danger of extinction and they need everyone’s help to survive.
Puerto Vallarta has one of the most successful protection programs for sea turtles in the country, it has managed to bring together the private sector (hotels) and local authorities of all levels in to the protection and conservation of this friendly and fragile visitor.
The objective of this program is to protect the eggs from the predators (including human) so a bigger amount of baby turtles are born. These eggs are collected from the natural nests after the mother leaves them behind and transported to protected nurseries in the most important hotels of the area where they can finish their life process and be born without any danger.
Once the baby turtles are born they are released to the ocean with participation of local visitors and tourist with the finality of creating a culture of conservation and protection for these animal species. Participants from all ages are welcome and each of them is allowed to release one of this baby turtles once they have listen to an informative speech given by the oceanologist in charge.
