Tonala is a small city and handcrafts center with national and international reputation. The most beautiful Mexican artwork can be found there at the best prices.
But if you are interested on the real handcrafts then you should visit “El Tianguis de Tonala” (Tonala’s Flea market) Before the Spaniards came to Mexico, the flea market was held on Thursdays and the traditional place was Tonala’s main square.
Natives from the different areas and different tribes use to exchange merchandises without the need for money, with the arrival of the Spaniards, the tradition was respected but Sunday was added to the event (due catholic religion beliefs)
This flea market is on this days one of the best in the country although they don’t exchange merchandises any more, is all for sale. Around 4,000 merchants set up their stores in this flea market every Thursday and Sunday of the year mainly on the streets of Juarez, Madero, Cruz Blanca, Santos Degollado, Avenida Tonaltecas and Tonala.
This is an art crafts flea market but you can also find all kind of traditional food and snacks. The latest addition is from products that are not exactly art craft but are attractive for all the visitors.
Tonala is located 4.5 hours away from Puerto Vallarta and a quick trip to this small city located next to Guadalajara (state capital) will give you the real Mexican experience, and while you are there; don’t forget to visit “El Tianguis de Tonala” where you will find the most incredible stuff at the most incredible prices.
As always, our recommendation is for you to contact us and book all of your tours and activities while you are in Puerto Vallarta. We know what’s best!
