Puerto Vallarta just like the rest of Mexico has it very own legends and this popular beach holds some of the most popular ones.
These are the three legends of “Los Muertos”Beach (Beach of the dead) you can take your pick:
1 – A long time ago, pirates used to stop at this beach and steal as much as they could and take advantage of the locals, there were constant battles, one of those times it turned to be a huge battle that seemed more like a war. At the end of this battle the beach was covered with dead bodies and that is why they named the beach of the dead.
2 – A long time ago, when Puerto Vallarta was a very small town and only a few people lived in the area; the cemetery was in this beach. As the town grew they found the need for a bigger cemetery and they builder another one on the skirts of town so they could relocate the cemetery, but the name remained for this beach “The beach of the dead”
3 – A long time ago, pirates used to come in to land right here in Puerto Vallarta and sometimes they even hide their treasures in the area, but one day, in a full moon, the captain, who was the only one that knew where the treasure was hidden, could not remember any more. The big treasure from that pirate ship was buried and when he realized that he just couldn’t remember, he sent his crew to look for it. After long hours, one of the pirates found a big fortune, a marvelous treasure. But he tried to hide it and not share with the rest of the crew, when everyone found out, they starting fighting with each other for the bounty, the legend states that there were no survivors, only dead people on the beach, and that is why the locals called “the beach of the dead”
As you can see, the second one seems more credible because there are historic reasons to believe that there was a cemetery on that area, but that is just too boring.
Welcome to Puerto Vallarta, you will find “Los Muertos” beach on “Old Town” and it will stay with you for ever!
